The former ex-protection standard is not longer valid. In case of explosive atmosphere the old standard requires ex-protection for electric motors, switches and so on. The new ATEX standard, valid since 1st of June 2003 requires ex-protection for all parts of a machine. When operating an Oil Skimmer in explosive atmosphere, parts like motor, gear, drive wheel, housing, oil collector tube have to be manufactured according to the ATEX standard. For example, it is not possible to use parts made of aluminum in explosive atmosphere.

The Friess Oil Skimmer are made of stainless steel and are now available with ATEX certificate.
